Nature and Forest Bathing: An Immersive Continuing-Education Experience

Fri, Oct 2nd 9:00am-12:00pm

3 hrs Total NBCC Continuing Education Hours

1 hour of Ethics included

In-Person Training

Description

Step beyond the traditional therapy office and discover how nature can become an intentional extension of the therapeutic environment.

This immersive continuing education experience introduces behavioral health professionals to the principles of Forest Bathing (Shinrin-Yoku) and nature-based mindfulness while exploring practical ways to ethically integrate outdoor therapeutic experiences into clinical practice. Participants will experience evidence-informed mindfulness activities firsthand while learning how these interventions may be thoughtfully adapted for clients in a variety of counseling settings.

Through experiential learning at Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve, participants will explore how mindfulness, sensory awareness, and intentional connection with nature can support emotional regulation, stress reduction, resilience, self-awareness, and overall well-being. The training emphasizes practical clinical application, helping therapists confidently determine when, where, and how to incorporate nature-based interventions into counseling practice.

Participants will also examine the ethical and legal considerations associated with moving therapy beyond the traditional office environment, including informed consent, confidentiality in public spaces, documentation, boundaries, safety planning, accessibility, risk management, and scope of competence.

A unique component of this training explores how thoughtfully designed nature-based interventions may expand opportunities for healing among diverse client populations, including underserved and marginalized communities. Participants will discuss ways outdoor therapeutic experiences may reduce barriers to traditional office-based counseling for some individuals while promoting cultural humility, community connection, accessibility, and holistic wellness. Emphasis will be placed on individualized treatment planning and ethical decision-making, recognizing that nature-based counseling is one therapeutic option—not a one-size-fits-all intervention—and should always be adapted to meet each client's unique needs, preferences, culture, abilities, and clinical presentation.

Attendees will leave with practical tools, ethical guidance, and greater confidence in determining when and how nature can become a meaningful extension of the therapeutic process.

NBCC Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the foundational principles of Forest Bathing (Shinrin-Yoku), mindfulness, and nature-based therapeutic interventions and their application within behavioral health practice.

  2. Identify ethical and legal considerations associated with providing counseling services in outdoor settings, including informed consent, confidentiality, documentation, professional boundaries, safety planning, accessibility, and scope of competence.

  3. Demonstrate mindfulness-based activities and nature-centered interventions that may be incorporated into counseling sessions to support emotional regulation, stress reduction, resilience, and client well-being.

  4. Evaluate how nature-based counseling interventions may promote accessibility, cultural responsiveness, and client engagement among diverse populations, including underserved and marginalized communities, while applying ethical and individualized clinical decision-making.

3 hours of Ethics

NBCC Continuing Education Hours
In-Person Training

Description

The release of the 2026 ACA Code of Ethics marks an important milestone for the counseling profession. As ethical standards evolve to address contemporary clinical practice, counselors must understand not only what has changed—but how those changes influence ethical decision-making, documentation, supervision, technology, and client care.

This interactive training provides a practical review of the most significant updates within the 2026 ACA Code of Ethics, comparing key revisions to previous standards while exploring their impact on everyday counseling practice. Through discussion, case examples, and ethical decision-making exercises, participants will examine how the revised Code applies to real-world clinical situations and develop practical strategies for implementing updated ethical standards with confidence.

Whether you are a seasoned clinician, supervisor, or counselor early in your career, this workshop will help you move beyond simply reading the Code to understanding how it informs ethical, culturally responsive, and clinically sound practice.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify significant revisions within the 2026 ACA Code of Ethics and explain how these updates reflect the evolving responsibilities of professional counselors.

  2. Compare previous ethical standards with the revised Code to recognize changes that influence counseling practice, supervision, documentation, technology, and professional responsibility.

  3. Apply the updated ACA Code of Ethics to clinical scenarios using an ethical decision-making framework that promotes client welfare, professional integrity, and culturally responsive care.

  4. Evaluate ethical considerations related to emerging issues in counseling practice, including technology, artificial intelligence (AI), confidentiality, professional boundaries, and documentation, as guided by the revised Code.

  5. Develop practical strategies for implementing the 2026 ACA Code of Ethics within their clinical practice, supervision, agency, or private practice setting while maintaining ethical and professional accountability.

Elective Forgiveness: A Trauma-Informed Approach to Healing and Choice

However, clients may experience pressure from families, faith communities, cultural expectations, clinicians, or society to forgive before they are ready—or to forgive when forgiveness may not be part of their chosen healing process.

This training will examine elective forgiveness as an intentional and client-directed choice. Participants will explore the relationships among forgiveness, trauma, grief, anger, boundaries, reconciliation, accountability, justice, culture, spirituality, and personal autonomy.

This program is currently in development for 2027.
